Orthodontic Hall of Fame Inducts my Patient
Dr. Debra Fink is proud to announce that her patient, Dr. Steven Couch, has been inducted into the Adult Hall of Fame of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).
Dr. Couch did not have braces as a child but he decided that the time was right to start treatment with Dr. Fink as an adult in April of 2013 and as of April 2014, the AAO site reports that, “his teeth already look perfectly straight.” As a new inductee to this orthodontic Hall of Fame, Dr. Couch noted that not only did the orthodontic treatment provide aesthetic benefits but it also helped him to develop healthier habits, such as drinking less coffee and stopping his soda intake altogether. As a result, Dr. Couch reports that “without question, [h]e recommends orthodontic treatment to other adults.”
The American Association of Orthodontists reports that in a survey of adult orthodontic patients, 75% reported that their post-orthodontic treatment smile resulted in improvements in their careers or personal relationships. In fact the AAO recently completed a survey which shows that adults are seeking orthodontic treatment in record numbers: adult patients now account for approximately 20% of all orthodontic patients. In addition, from 2010 to 2012, the number of adult orthodontic patients increased 14% to a record high of 1,225,850 patients. The president of the AAO noted that in the past adults often spent decades avoiding orthodontic treatment due to misplaced concerns, but innovative, discreet orthodontic treatment options allow adults to enjoy the aesthetic and health benefits of orthodontic treatment in a virtually undetectable manner.
The American Association of Orthodontists was founded in 1900 and is the world’s oldest and largest dental specialty organization, with over 17,000 members. As of 2012, its members were treating about 5,876,000 patients per year, which is also a record high. The AAO is committed to encouraging and sponsoring important research to enable its members to provide the highest quality of care to patients and Dr. Fink is a proud member of the AAO.
